Although we never extensively studied the matter, Valentines day went the way of Christmas and Easter for us, and we don’t celebrate it any longer. However, as most of the world is thinking of how to bless their significant others right now, and communicating love to a spouse is always a good thing, I thought now would be a good time to write about one of the best gifts I ever gave my husband – one that cost me absolutely nothing and brought my husband to tears. It’s really simple, but powerful, and here is what I did:
While my husband was at work, I cooked him a nice dinner and lit candles all around the house (nothing terribly original about that.) Then I posted a big sheet of paper on the living room wall that said:
I LOVE YOU BECAUSE
All around the house, I then posted little pieces of paper on which I had written down some of the things I appreciated about him, and placed them in relevant areas in our home. For instance, on a pillow I placed a note that said:
I love you because you always give me the best pillow
On the closet door:
I love you because you get my shoes for me when we’re going out
In the kitchen:
I love you because you take the trash out
At the back door:
I love you because you spray the bugs under the house
In miscellaneous places I posted things like:
I love you because you care about my issues (even when they’re silly)
and
I love you because you think I’m beautiful
and
I love you because you’re happy when you come home
In all, I wrote over fifty notes and placed them all over the house. They weren’t “romantic,” just little things to let my husband know that the things he did for me were noticed and appreciated. I think that’s what really got to him – knowing that I noticed and appreciated all those little things that don’t always get recognized.
This is something that can be done any time, and I think it’s something that would be even more meaningful if done on an “ordinary” day, especially if (like us) you have qualms about Valentines Day possibly being a Pagan Holiday.

What a sweet idea! I love it and I will have to steal it
Thank you!
You’re welcome to it, and if you have a few free moments I’d love to know how it goes!
That is the greatest idea! I’m with you….celebrating these holidays …..well….is just kinda wasteful. But doing something meaningful such as that….priceless!
It’s important to honor one another…..not buy some expensive gift that will be tossed later.
I love it.
I think I may have to steal that idea, too, sometime!
Thank you, Wanda. It really meant a lot to my husband – much more than any store bought gift would have meant to him.
such a sweet idea! i love it!
I just wanted to thank you so much for this post. I did this for my husband on Valentine’s Day and was shocked by his reaction. It meant so much to him!
Thank you for sharing such a great idea!
Judy, thank you so much for stopping by and taking the time to tell me this – I’m so glad that your husband was blessed by it.
